February Winners
Kent Mace, FL Best Story
"When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
"Last summer my crew was delivering UMTS cabinets to a site in a cow pasture in Florida. There was a Blue sky but far in the distance you could see a thunder cloud in the sky. Far away they thought! A herd of cows were walking towards the trucks as they always do looking for feed. They gathered outside the fence lease area.
As they were un-strapping the load on the truck a lightning strike hit the herd of cows 30 yards away from the crew. It is not known if the lightning hit the tower first and then went to ground or the strike was at the base tower. It never rained nor did the storm ever come any closer.
Two guys were on the truck and one was standing on the ground could not believe how close that was. The man on the ground stated that he “felt his hair stand up”. As they regained their composure the look over by the fence to see three dead cows still smoking and a cow bird with a burn line going from head to tail. The balance of the herd ran away. Lesson learned, even with the 40 mile rule in effect we have adopted a new policy. When thunder roars get off site and indoors!"

John Teague, TN Photo Category
"In 2004 Hurricane Ivan made landfall just west of Pensecola FL. In a little town called Robertsdale, AL there was a 1600' tower that received a direct hit from one of the tornados that spawned off of Hurricane Ivan. All that was remaining of the tower was 535' with a 10,000 pound section hanging off of the remaining tower. About 10 days into the repair, the tower was in the clouds and the clouds broke about 490' leaving room for some awesome photography."
